8 Things you Must Know about your Smartphone Cameras: Do you know them

Megapixel is not only the parameter in a Smartphone Camera: Here are other important parameters

Camera quality of the smartphones is now on the verge of competing with more expensive digital cameras. The smartphone equipped great camera in mid-range also but at flagship level you get an great camera which are capable for mind-blowing photography. Now most of the flagship smartphones come with come with dual-camera and a few of them also with triple lens. So, what are you thinking more lens means better camera, more Megapixels means great camera?? But have you ever wonder smartphone like Google Pixel 2 XL has a single 12-megapixel camera and still one of the best camera smartphone in the world. So, now the question is that what are the main factors for good camera?? Lets try to find in this article.

1. Megapixels(MP):

This probably the first thing that come to our mind and this is also the first thing that company shows us during there smartphone launch. Our mentality is that more Megapixel means great smartphone camera but actually the thing is that Megapixel stand for millions of pixels (1MP means one million pixels). Higher megapixel count in camera will result in bigger image, or its the resolution of the image (picture size). So it seems like more megapixels means better image quality which is not always true, as pixel quality matters more than the number of pixels.

2. Camera Lens:

Camera lens is that thing on which most of us never focus. Actually, there are companies like Samsung, Sony are the main camera lens makers in the market. Camera lens matters because with time to time camera lenses are getting updated with new features, quality etc. There are many types of camera lens present for smartphones and most of these are use in dual-camera phones. Have you ever heard of Sony IMX373, Sony IMX486 these are the camera lenses and types of camera lenses like: Telephoto lens, Monochrome sensor, RGB lens, wide-angle lens and many more.

3. Aperture:

Aperture is one of the most important thing in a camera. Have you ever noticed that most of the mid-range smartphones comes with f/2.2, f/2.0 aperture while, the flagships are come with f/1.7,f/1.6 aperture? What that means? Actually, aperture is like the pupil of camera. It is an hole size in camera which controls the amount to light that can pass through the lens and the camera sensor. Smaller aperture size indicates the wider opening of the hole and wider opening means more light can pass through the camera lens. So lesser the aperture indicates better quality. The aperture also regulates the overall sharpness of the image and also helps in achieving a shallow depth of field.

4. Shutter Speed:

Shutter speed is also an important feature like aperture or there are three main thing of cameras are aperture, ISO and shutter speed. Camera Shutter is work as it opens and closes to let light enter the camera and capture the image just like our eyelids and the speed indicates the time for which the shutter will remain open to expose the light on camera sensor. Shutter speed helps in controlling the exposure of an image which is like brightness and need to adjust according to light condition for great photos. The slower the speed the brighter the speed.

5. ISO:

ISO is the measurement of the camera sensitivity. ISO can help to achieve the better looking images in Low light as well as in extra light condition. There is simple formula of ISO is that darker the light, higher the ISO. So, if you want to great shots in very low light condition you need a camera with lower aperture, slower shutter speed of higher ISO value and just opposite in good light condition.

6. Stabilization:

Have you ever heard about stabilization? like OIS or EIS or Hybrid Stabilization. Image stabilization is basically a technique which prevents the image getting blurred or videos getting shaky. There are types of stabilizations like OIS (Optical Image Stabilization)- This OIS is an physical technique which uses moving lens element and gyroscope sensor. OIS determines the camera movements using the gyroscope sensor to counter the movement by moving lens module sideways and up and down. This OIS technique is costlier. So, you can see the OIS in flagships rather than mid-range smartphones. Than there is another technique which is EIS (Electronic Image Stabilization) which works on software or a software technique that try to give you stable shots and stable videos. Than there are stabilization technique which you can get in smartphones like Pixel 2- called Hybrid Stabilization which uses both OIS as well as EIS on same time and gives you super stable videos.

7. Depth of Field:

This is currently the most wanted feature in smartphone called Portrait shots. So, the depth of field work as its blur the area in an image which are not in focus. There are basically two type of depth of field, if an image has everything in focus then it has the deeper depth of field and if an image has its foreground or only background in focus then it has a shallow depth of field. Depth of field control by the aperture of camera and smartphone companies starts to give dual-camera sensors in there smartphone. If the secondary camera sensor use for the depth of field than that should be a telephoto lens. But Google Pixel 2 uses the software optimization to get the bokeh or portrait effect and still one of the best portrait shots provided.

8. Flash or Night Mode:

Smartphones are easy to use as compare to DSLR. In day-light condition most of the smartphone are capable to take good pictures and specially the Flagships, Most of them are take awesome pictures in day-light condition. But when it comes to low light photography most of the smartphone camera fails. Companies try to give small aperture, night-mode, Flash which help in the low light photography.

There are mainly two types of flash lights are present LED and True Tone LED. LED being the cheapest technology and the most commonly used flash mostly in budget and mid-range category. True LED flash is one of the best flash technology and mostly available in Flagships. Then further flash-light divided into parts on basis of intensity like- dual-LED flash, dual-tone LED flash, quad-LED flash etc. Smartphones like Huawei P20 Pro comes with Night-Mode which capture the shots in frames and process them to capture great dark light shots with the help of Artificial Technology.

So, all these are the main parameters of any smartphone camera. I hope this article will help you to understand that the only megapixel count are not only the perfect parameter for great camera.
