The data security on the social media platforms has always been an issue, which has increased with time. This year facebook was suffered by a huge security breach, effecting millions of users' accounts. These are some ways through which you can secure your Facebook account :
Third party apps : Most of the websites and applications gives you an option to login their services using your facebook account. While this saves you time and efforts and makes the whole process easier, it can harm your privacy. For example, majority of the time when you use this feature, you are allowing an app or service which you may want to use only once or twice to access you information. When you stop using these third party apps, they still have that access to your information. It becomes important to unlink all these apps from your social media as they can monitor your activities.
To review and revoke the access given to the third party apps, head to the "settings" and then to "apps and websites". There will be a list of apps and websites that you have used Facebook to login. There you can easily remove the apps and websites that you no longer use.
Login notifications : This is the feature provided by the Facebook for the users to receive a notification whenever they login the account. This helps you to know whether you have logged in to your account or someone else did. This option not only tell you the time but the location too of the place where your account was logged in.
To activate this feature, head to the "settings", from there to "login and settings". Then go to "get alerts about unrecognized logins" and click "edit" to "choose where you want to receive alerts" and then save the changes.
Make your close friends your authenticators : Whenever Facebook detects any unrecognised login attempts or any hacking activity, it locks down your account, making the account inaccessible. The process to regain your Facebook account is very complicated and lengthy but there's an option where you can choose three to five friends who can help you to login to your account pretty easily.
To nominate your friends, go to settings, security and login and then to "choose friends to contact", and select at least three to five people from your friend list. If you get locked out, these friends can send you verification codes for authentication to help you regain access to your account.
Block suspicious friends : If you find your Facebook friends acting weirdly online or posting some really absurd stuff, possibilities are their account might be hacked. It is better to confirm it from them through a call or some medium and if yes, then block it. The chances are, your account may also get hacked if not blocked.
Also accept only those friend requests which seems legitimate as some of those accounts may be fake, which is a little unsafe.
Privacy Settings : Facebook by default keeps all the things you share on public. Which means that anyone can view your profile, the post you share, your pictures and videos, your personal details like your school or college, the city you live in, you number, etc. Giving access to such information to the strangers is quite risky.
To increase your privacy, Facebook gives you an option to toggle your privacy settings. To change the privacy go to the "settings", and select "privacy settings and tools". Go to "your activity" and change the settings to "friends". You can also change the settings where you can decide who can find you which means who can send you request, view your phone number, e-mail, view your friend list, etc. To change it, there's a tab just below "your activity" which says "how people find and contact you". Here you toggle the settings to friends of friends or only friends.
