How to clear all those old emails out of Gmail so you don't have to pay for storage

Google Gmail offered users a generous 15 gigabytes of free storage. Long-term Gmail users are likely to start reaching their storage limit, due to the accumulation of emails. They face two options to make more room; paying for extra space or delete old emails - here’s how to avoid paying extra for Gmail storage.

Identify unimportant emails:

Most emails are unimportant – losing their value immediately after they are read.
Many emails are automatically generated, such as Google Alerts, newsletters and adverts.
These emails can easily be marked for deletion.

Batch process similar emails:

Many spam emails are frequently received from the same sender.
Once these are identified, click on the three dot icon at the top of the email on at the far right side of the icon menu, and select Filter messages like these.
Next click Select all conversations that match this search, which select all similar emails in your inbox.
By clicking on the trash icon will delete this batch.

Permanently delete emails:

Although deleted emails disappear from your inbox, they actually linger for another month in Trash.
Those desperate to free up space can do so by scrolling down on left-hand menu and open the Trash folder.
Then simply select Empty Trash now, which will delete everything.

Unsubscribe from emails:

A long-term option to keep your inbox empty can be found using the Gmail unsubscribe button.

This feature helps prevent receiving any unnecessary newsletters no longer read.
Simply open an unwanted newsletter and click the Unsubscribe option.
Repeat this for every unwanted newsletter.

Set up filters:

Gmail's filter feature automatically mark certain emails read without deleting them.
This is useful for things such as receipts .

Then click on the three dot icon on the top left, followed by Filter messages like these.
Next click Create filter and check the Mark as read box.

If you have a bunch of these emails that are unread, you can also check the box that says Also apply filter to matching conversations.

Then finish the process by clicking on Create filter.

You can edit or delete filters find all of them by clicking on the gear icon at the top right corner of the screen and select Settings.

You can find all of your filters by clicking Filters and Blocked Addresses.
