The Hero 6 Black is dead! Long live the Hero 7 Black! That’s right. There’s a new range of action cameras which have replaced their predecessors: all you’ll find on GoPro’s website is the Hero 7 Black, Silver and White models, along with the 360-degree Fusion – the only older model staying on sale.

You can pre-order all three new models immediately, with delivery expected on 2 October.

That isn’t the fastest way to get hold of one, though. They’ll go on sale in bricks-and-mortar stores on 27 September (internationally) and in the US on 30 September, which is a Sunday.

Hero 7 price

The Hero 7 Black is the flagship model and costs £379.99, or US$399.

In the middle is the Silver which costs £279.99 or US$299.

The entry-level model is – you guessed it - £179.99 or US$199.

A simple range with simple pricing. You can buy the Hero 7 from GoPro and you’ll get a free 32GB microSD card.

So what you get for the extra £100 / $100 over the Silver model is that the Black is the only one with the GP1 processor that can handle the new HyperSmooth video stabilisation.

It records 4K video at 60 frames per second; the Silver is limited to 30fps. It also has all the ‘pro’ features that the cheaper models lack: raw photos, an optional external mic, the Protune mode and the status screen on the front.

It also has a new TimeWarp video mode which GoPro says is like a ‘magic carpet ride’ and speeds up footage up to 30x.

For the first time since the Hero Session, the Silver and White models have non-removable batteries. That will be a deal-breaker for some since you can’t just swap out a dead battery for a fully-charged one: another reason to go for the Black version.

Note that the Silver and White aren’t compatible with GoPro’s Karma drone, and the White model actually records 1440p video which has to be cropped if you want 1080p video at 60fps.

All three models have an updated interface which is easier to use and allows you to scrub through videos easily when reviewing them. They can also shoot video in portrait mode, and the interface rotates automatically to portrait.
