Sony has unveiled its new Alpha a6400, a mirrorless camera
targeted at creators and vloggers who need something more substantial than
their phone, but who may not be ready for a large, complicated camera. The new
a6400 caters to its target customers with the inclusion of a 180-degree
rotating LCD, making it possible for users to record themselves manually while
also viewing the built-in display.
The new Sony mirrorless camera features a 24.2-megapixel APS-C
Exmor CMOS sensor joined by the BIONZ X image processor, a 180-degree touch
LCD, and what Sony calls the fastest ever auto focus acquisition speed of 0.02
seconds. As well, the a6400 features 425 phase detection and contrast detection
auto focus points that span across 84-percent of the camera’s image area.
The model’s focusing abilities are rounded out by advanced
real-time Eye AF, plus there’s real-time object tracking for ensuring the
subject of the video or images remains in focus at all times. In addition to
supporting 4K Ultra HD video recording and an advanced level of focusing speed,
the Sony a6400 also supports continuous shooting at 11fps with the mechnical
shutter and 8fps when using continuous AF/AE tracking.
According to Sony, this new Alpha camera brings some of the
maker’s most advanced offerings from its full-frame camera lineup to its
lighter, more compact mirrorless products. In addition to its notable AF and
recording abilities is an ISO range expandable by up to ISO 102400 for still
images (32000 for movies), noise suppression involving image processing
algorithms from the maker’s full-frame cameras, and support for HDR/HLG
compatible TVs.
Other features include an XGA OLED Tru-finder viewfinder, which
joins the 3-inch hinted, tiltable rear LCD, plus 8 custom keys that can be
assigned uses from among 89 functions and improvements to the camera’s menu
system. Sony plans to launch the model next month for $900 USD, and with
different bundled lens options ranging from $1000 to $1300 USD.
