We’re going to show you how to control your fan speed in Windows 10. There are a couple of ways you can do this and a lot will depend on your exact set-up, but the most consistent way to do this is to head into your computer’s BIOS.
If you’re looking to turn down your fan speed it’s probably because they’re making too much noise. This can be for a few reasons but usually its because they are running quickly to keep your system cool. If you’re encountering this on a laptop, try making sure your laptop is getting enough ventilation to its intake fans - place it flat on a desk or a hard surface, not on a duvet or anything it can sink down into.
If your desktop PC fans are making too much noise your case and fans could need cleaning out because of dust and debris build-up, the environment you keep your PC may be too warm, or something may be blocking air intake fans. If your desktop tower is resting on carpet or a soft surface, try placing some cardboard under the front of the structure to so your intake fans aren't directly over carpet.
How to change your fan speed in WIndows 10
The first thing you’ll need to do is head into your BIOS and luckily for you, we have a guide on how to do that right here.
Once you’re in, you’ll need to navigate your way to the fan controls. This will usually be under hardware settings or something similar to that. The BIOS menu will be slightly different depending on your motherboard manufacturer.
Once you’ve found the fan controls, you’ll probably find them on auto - you’ll be able to turn the fans down by percentage points here to make them run slower or more silently. However, this will reduce their cooling effect and cause your PC to heat up which may force your fans to speed up for the sake of your components.
The best way of keeping your fans running slowly is to make sure your PC is getting enough cool air, so it’s probably best trying that method before you start poking around in the BIOS - take a look at our guide on how to keep your laptop cool.
